Terrestrial Plants

Many species of plants require the additional water found in the soil of the riparian zone. Unfortunately at our monitoring sites, these include invasive Bush Honeysuckle and poisonous Water Hemlock.

Our streams however do share some plants with more undisturbed sites. These include lower-growing plants such as Water Smartweed, Buttonbush, and American Water Willow.

Some of the trees we find along our creeks include Box Elder, Black Willow, American Sycamore, Eastern Redbud, and Silver Maple.

A wide diversity of species found is a good indicator of ecosystem health.
