Plant Life

Plants are vital to the stream ecosystem. They are the primary producers, converting energy from the sun into a biologically useful form.

There are plants that live in and under the water, and others that are found on land, in the riparian zone—the transition areas between the aquatic (water) and terrestrial (uplands) lands, where the extra water results in moist soils supporting water-loving vegetation. They are the green belts you see around rivers, lakes, wetlands, and streams.
